Dear Oakland County Community Members:
Great Start Collaborative Oakland has been planting seeds of success to grow the future of our community. Over six
years, we have watched this initiative take root, branch out and grow stronger. We recognize the importance of every
child having strong roots to support a healthy and successful start in school and in life. We are committed to ensuring our
community that we reach deeper to meet the needs of young children and their families.
This report was created to inform our community about the Great Start initiative in Oakland County. It contains the goals,
strategies, activities and measurement plan that will guide our work from today through the next three years.
With the formation of Michigan’s Office of Great Start, we have operationalized our work within the four Great Start
outcome areas and built upon the guiding principles.
Our efforts focus on three key themes for our early childhood systems building efforts:
• Access and Eligibility • Knowledge and Information • Collaboration and Coordination
Our strategic priorities include:
• Promoting Healthy Beginnings • Building Strong Families • Promoting Quality Early Learning
Our innovative approaches include:
• Seeds: New ideas based on evidence based practices
• Soil: People and organizations willing to be a catalyst for impact
• Climate: Funding, professional learning and parent leadership that support children’s success
We have spent the past six months conducting system scans, collecting and analyzing data and creating our action agenda.
We reached out to and heard from over 4,500 community members and parents to understand the needs and priorities of young children in Oakland County. During each step of the strategic planning process, families with young children
provided us with important data to inform our work and guide our efforts. It is our sincere hope that our collaborative
efforts will increase the efficiencies and effectiveness of service providers, agency partners, families and community
members as we give our young children the roots they need to achieve their highest potential.
